York St John University
Location:
HISS 2012 will be held at York St John University (Lord Mayor’s Walk campus), a modern campus including delightful seventeenth century elements, facing the city walls, 10 minutes' walk from the picturesque city centre. Postcode YO31 7EX; Click this link for travel directions and maps
The City of York offers a unique range of attractions for visitors, in addition to the Minster, the largest Gothic church in northern Europe, both inside and outside its historic city walls. These include 20 medieval churches, mostly open to visitors, the Shambles medieval street, the gates or "bars". Also, there are Clifford's Tower, York Dungeon and Jorvik Centre, attesting to the city's colourful history over two millennia. There is the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, boat trips, and hidden gems such as Barley Hall, Fairfax House and the Merchant Adventurers Hall.
"Good choice of sessions - difficult to know what to attend!" "One of the most rewarding, and stimulating, early music courses I've been on."

ACCOMMODATION:

The Shambles, York
_Rooms
are standard single rooms (shared bathroom) in halls of residence on
campus, mostly close to the rooms in the music and drama departments
being used by the course. A very few accessible en-suite rooms are
available for those with special or medical needs - please enquire for
details. All meals are provided on campus, and the large bar has space
for playing tunes or informal singing in the evenings.
York has a great variety of tourist accommodation, so if you prefer to stay off-campus there is plenty of choice. A selection of reasonably close hotels and B&B can be found under Accommodation. We STRONGLY recommend early booking, especially since this year the York Mystery Plays will be concurrent with HISS.
Meals:
All meals will be available in the campus refectory, a smart and pleasant building. Breakfast and evening meal are included for residents, evening meal only for non-residents. Lunch is not included in the fees, but is available at very reasonable cost in the dining hall. Course members may wish to explore the variety of eateries close by in the city centre, and make use of their free time in the afternoon.

_"Generally very well run. We were looked after very well."
Bar, Musical Banquet & Finale: Each evening the bar will be open, and all participants are encouraged to partake of this facility - if not for a relaxing drink, then to take part in tunes sessions, or informal singing. Dinner on Thursday evening will take the form of a more leisurely banquet. Between courses groups, either pre-formed or from the classes and sessions running during the week, are invited to give a short informal performance. The course ends after lunch on Friday, with a performance of music prepared in the full course sessions during the week.
