Welcome

Welcome to Historically Informed Summer School 2024

19 - 23 August at Bishop Burton College nr Beverley, East Yorkshire, UK

HISS 2024 will offer our usual wide range of opportunities for players and singers of early, folk and traditional music. We are especially pleased that our team of outstanding tutors will be augmented this year for a special project by Robert Hollingworth. Many of you will know of his outstanding and innovative work with the vocal group I Fagiolini. His latest project is the exploration of three multi-choir masses by the little known 17th century Roman composer Orazio Benevoli (1602-72). He wrote a number of sumptuous works for the expanded St Peter’s Rome, newly opened in 1634. As our special Guest Tutor Robert will lead us through the fabulous Missa Tu Es Petrus, with all singers and instrumentalists invited to take part. (Find out more about this year’s special project here.)

HISS 2023 all together!

This is really a year for singers at HISS. The Benevoli mass is based on Palestrina’s motet Tu Es Petrus. We will also mark the Carissimi anniversary (1605-74) with his ground breaking oratorio Jephte, for choir (with soloists) and instruments.

All our regular tutor team with be with us too. See what they are offering this year on the course content pages.

After the recent challenging years, we really need more of you than ever if we are to keep going. Please explore the pages here to see what’s on offer.

Whether you have been before, or are new to HISS, you are assured of a warm welcome to HISS, which this year is running from Mon 19 - Fri 23 August 2024.
