discuss delivery and stylistic elements, analyse source recordings and contemporary interpretations,
and experiment with vocal harmonisation.

all sessions are suitable for any level of singer.
Hazel Askew
Over the past fifteen years Hazel has become renowned as a skilled and engaging performer on the folk scene, creating new interpretations and striking arrangements of traditional and original music in every project she works on.
She is best known for performing within a longstanding duo with her sister Emily as The Askew Sisters and as a third of Lady Maisery.
She was also a Musical Director on the recent national tours of the musical Fisherman’s Friends. So you might even get a session on shanties (if you ask nicely!)
At HISS every evening ends with a tunes session in the bar - so this will be right up your street! And if you play an instrument, you may be able to join some of John Dipper’s sessions too. Have a look around the website to see what else is going on!
For all attendees - the evening bar sessions are great for everyone to join in playing or singing together
We have two resources useful for this.
You can purchase a copy of the HISS Tunebooks (1&2 combined) £10 and/or the HISS Songbook £5 at the course.
The HISS Tunebooks 1 & 2 were compiled between 1012 and 2017, mainly by Thomas Green and Stewart Hardy, and include melodies (with simple chord indications) for over 150 traditional and folk tunes.
The HISS Songbook was compiled from several cotriubutors, and includes the meldoy and words of about thirty well known traditional and folk tunes, plus a number of rounds.
You can also download both books as a pdf on the Downloads page here
